As colleges and universities begin the fall semester, textbook season is upon us, a great time to make some extra sales and make up for the slow summer season. Many colleges are starting in the next few weeks, which means lots of orders for those of us selling used textbooks.

The following tips are adapted from a email received from Amazon services.

Fulfilling Orders

-Be prepared for a sudden increase in orders. Check your account daily, so you do not miss orders, in case you do not receive the email notification- If you sell through multiple sales channels, avoid problems by updating your inventory daily.

Listing and Description

-Make sure your textbooks are listed under the correct ISBN and the condition is described accurately.

- Check the details on the page to avoid listing your book against a page for a different version or edition.

- When listing your book, pick the appropriate condition and add accurate condition notes about marks and highlighting.

- Do not list international editions, solutions manuals, or teacher’s editions. These items are prohibited.

Shipping

- Students need their books ASAP and will pick listings that offer expedited shipping.

- Ship within 2 business days.

- Provide Shipping confirmation to your buyers.

- E-mail a shipment confirmation to the buyer with date shipped, method of shipment, and estimated
arrival date.

- You may want to consider purchasing delivery confirmation or using a trackable shipping method.

Returns

- If you must refund an order, do so promptly.

- Students often need to return textbooks due to class cancellations. All Amazon.com sellers must accept returns even if the order is fulfilled correctly.

- Impress your buyers by helping to expedite returns. Consider including a return address and instructions inside your package in addition to the return address on the package itself.

- Request that your buyer pack the item and return it to you. In cases where the seller is not responsible for the return, return shipping costs should be paid by the buyer. Upon receipt, immediately issue the appropriate refund.

Welcome to the Money Making Books Series at Bookseller Tips, where I discuss specific books you can find in thrift stores, garage or yard sales, or other places that will put money in your pocket.

Today we’re going to look at an old classic in the kitchen Betty Crocker’s Cookbook, with the pie(round) cover. This book was published from the late 60’s to the early seventies in this form. The next edition, which is more common, has a square pattern on the cover, and not as valuable. This book is fairly common, however, and frequently turns up. I would guess it is popular with people who grew up with this in their mom’s kitchen and now want a copy of their own.

This book sells for $15 to $40+, depending on condition, and also comes in a 3 ring binder format.

Check out eBay completed auctions for the Betty Crocker Cook Book Pie Cover

Finding used books to sell online is not always easy, but there are many places to “bookscout” out there. In order to find books to sell, you have to get out and look for them. Most people who are already selling used books know of all of these, but here are some of the most popular sources for finding used books to sell online.

Thrift Stores-

Thrift stores can be a great place to find books to sell online, especially for the hobby or part-time bookseller.Store that have a good turnover can be great, while stores that do not get fresh inventory on a regular basis can be a time-waster. You can occasionally find good books at these stores as well, so don’t give up on them altogether, but visit the stores with a regular turnover more frequently. For locations of thrift stores near you, check out TheThriftShopper.com

Garage Sales-

Garage sales can be a good source for used books, but they can be hit-or-miss. Although you can always find a diamond in the rough, learn to “read between the lines” when perusing the listings in the paper. Ads for sales with baby items, such as toys or clothes, often may not have very good books. Ads that describe “nice” contents, such as nice furniture, antiques, etc., may have nice books also even if they are not listed. Look at the neighborhood as well, people who live in upper class or wealthy neighborhoods with lots disposable income may have the nicest books, although there are always exceptions to the rule.

Estate Sales-

Estate sales can be a source of good books as well, but a little interpretation may be necessary here as well. These days, a sale listed as an estate sale may not be much more than a regular garage sale. Look for signs of nice things, antiques, etc in the listing as well as the neighborhood as well.

Friends of Library (FOL) Sales/Book Fairs-

FOL sales or fairs can be a great source, with many sales having thousands of books available. There will likely be stiff competition as well, as all of the other booksellers and dealers will be there as well, usually early. Get there as early as possible to find the best books before they get picked through. Check out Book Sale Finder to find upcoming library sales in your area.

Auctions-

If there are auctions in your area, they will likely have books from time to time. Make a few visits to find out how frequently books are included in their offerings.

Craigslist-

-Depending on where you live, craigslist can be a great or not so hot source for finding books. Much of this can depend on how many listings there are and how frequently they are added. In larger cities, obviously, there will be a lot more listings of books you can peruse.

Online-

Yes, you can buy books from one venue online and sell on another. There are many people who do this quite regularly and make decent money doing it. For example, buying a book on Ebay and selling it on Amazon.

However you get introduced to the concept of selling used books online, whether it is clearing out titles from your own collection, trying it out after browsing Ebay or Amazon, once you realize that you can make decent money for certain titles, the logical question you likely asked was “Can I really make money buying and then selling used books online”? The short answer is “Of course you can”, but the real answer depends on how much money you want to make. As a supplemental income stream, you can easily make a few hundred dollars a month, but to turn online book selling into a full-time income is another matter all together and certainly not easy. It also depends on how much time you have available and how much work you are willing to put into it. This site is intended for anyone looking to make money selling books online, from the beginner to the more advanced. Hopefully, there will even be new information for the seasoned veteran who may already be selling books full time. Over the next few weeks I will be posting articles on the following that will help you sell books online for profit:

Where to find used books to sell online.

Determining which books are worth buying to resell online.

Where to sell books online and which venues are appropriate for certain types of books.

Resources for increasing your knowledge about books and book selling.

Specific books to look for while scouting for used books.

Topics on many other aspects of selling books online such as transactions, packaging, shipping and describing books.
